Wired connection is almost always going to be better/faster regardless of how close you are. Wireless G (which is what PS3 is) maxes out at 54mb/s while gigabit ethernet (which PS3 is) goes up to 1000mb/s. Even if it's hooked up to a 100mb/s router, it's still better and preferred over wireless. Wired is also not as susceptible to interference
I'd recommend using a wired connection with the ps3, especially if you live in a densely populated neighborhood. The reason I say this is not even about speed, but about reliabilty. The ps3 wireless is 802.11g, which operates at roughly the same frequency as microwave ovens, and a lot of other stuff. The actual connection is fine, as I am sitting here and typing this message on our home PC, so the connection to our ISP is fine. Also when I connect it to the PS3, on the back where the LAN connector is the green lights are flickering, and when I pull the cable out the PS3 puts out a message on the screen saying "lan cable disconnected".
